毎年、来る年の正月に先駆けて12月17日から19日にかけて浅草の浅草寺で羽子板市が開催され多くの観光客でにぎわいます。今回の動画では、羽子板市を舞台に、日本の伝統的な工芸品である羽子板(Hagoita, Wooden Paddle)が元々何のためのものだったか、現代的な羽子板の特徴はどういったものかを英語でリポートしています。

羽子板の伝統的意味は、玄関前に飾って厄払い・魔除けをすることと、羽根突きをすることで女の子が元気に成長する事。
現代ではそのような意味は薄れ、行く年に成功を収めた芸能人や人気キャラクターをモチーフにした羽子板が多く売れており、成功者にあやかるというか、多くの場合華やかなただの飾りとしか見られていない。
動画の中で、羽子板業に長い間従事してきた杉浦さんは、日本人の道徳を維持してきた伝統文化が忘れられていく事を嘆いています。

Japan is having its annual Hagoita Fair or Wooden Paddle Fair at Sensoji Temple for three days this week, showcasing colorful and decorative wooden paddles. This time some popular celebrities were featured in the theme. Let’s take a look.
STORY:
Hagoita, or wooden paddle, originated from a Japanese tradition, where during the New Year girls would play Hanetsuki, a badminton-like game with wooden paddles and a shuttlecock.
Originally wooden paddles are hand-made, using the finest cotton or washi paper. The paddles vary in size, representing a girl’s growth, and also symbolize health and safety.
Some people even put them at the front door to ward off evil, but now most Japanese just use it as a decoration.
Hiroshi Sugiura has been specializing in hagoita for 35 years. He thinks that because Japan’s culture has slowly been forgotten, it’s causing young people to loose a certain level of morality.

“It is important to treasure our traditional culture, as a way to keep morality. I want everybody here to think about it once again.”
Some popular celebrities are also showing up on the hagoita designs, like David Beckham, Bae Yong Joon, a Korean actor, several Sumo players and anime characters. This shows admiration to those that have been successful during the previous year.

豆知識。羽子板の生産は元々浅草等の下町で盛んでしたが、関東大震災や第二次世界大戦時の戦災をきっかけに生産の中心は埼玉に移動したそうです。
私は浅草寺の羽子板市を今まで行ったことないし、知りもしなかったのですが、若者が触れる機会が滅多にない日本の伝統文化が、昔と形や意味は変わったとしても、今も残り多くの人に愛され、さらに海外の観光客の方々にも楽しんでもらえるのは、日本人として嬉しい限りですね。来年は是非行って見たい！！
